Three R's for the Earth: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Because the earth’s population is steadily increasing, how we handle our waste will greatly affect our health as well as the quality of the environment. Fortunately, much of the waste being sent to landfills today can be eliminated if we simply remember to practice the three “R’s” of waste management.
Reduce

Reducing the amount of resources we use is the most important of the three R’s. It saves valuable natural resources from being used to create product, reduces the use of fossil fuels helping to eliminate greenhouse gases from contributing to global warming, reduces the the amount of waste and toxicity being added to our environment, and saves money.
Reuse

Reusing products, whether for their original purpose or for a new purpose, is the best alternative after reducing usage as it has the majority of the environmental benefits gained by reducing usage.
Recycle

Recycling is the process of collecting and reprocessing used items back into the raw materials used for manufacturing new products. As recycling requires remanufacturing and additional fossil fuel to transport the product back to the manufacturing facility, it comes third after Reducing & Reusing products in terms of environmental impact. However, the overall economic and environmental benefits of recycling are significant as recycling conserves our natural resources, uses less energy, reduces waste and any related collection costs, and reduces the toxicity that is released into the waste stream.

By simply purchasing green friendly products you will not only be helping protect the environment, you will also be cutting business costs and creating a more healthy and productive workplace.

  • Switch to recycled products, wherever possible, with as much post-consumer content as possible.
  • Use paper produced with FSC-certified fiber, produced in responsibly managed forests.
  • Use process chlorine free (PCF) recycled paper or elemental chlorine free (ECF) virgin paper.
  • Switch to bio-based products (sugarcane plates, corn cups, potato utensils, corn waste liners), versus plastic, petroleum-based products that contribute to global warming.

  • Switch to compact fluorescent bulbs as they use less energy and save money.

  • Use rechargeable batteries to eliminate toxic batteries from being discarded into our waste stream.
  • Use refillable pens and pencils.
  • Use rewriteable CDs & DVDs instead of one-time CDs and DVDs.
  • Buy furniture from manufacturers, such as Trendway, Global, National and Humanscale, that have third party certification for meeting Indoor Air Quality standards.
  • Order less frequently to conserve the amount of fuel required to make deliveries to you.
